Life takes you to the most unexpected places
When I was looking for a job I had my heart set on living in NYC. The lights, the hustle and bustle, the endless flow of creativity manifesting itself in small underground bands, street artists, and musicals. The city was home to food, music, and art from all over the globe, a patchwork of the new and old world. I was looking for the change and creativity that the city promised, the grime and grit that came with living in a cardboard box because I couldn't afford the rent, and I couldn't wait to be in the middle of it all.
Instead, I got Washington DC, the land of collared shirts and dry-cleaned suits. And politicians, government employees, and military personnel. I have never seen a city whose residents are just so... I don't know. Not what I was looking for? Granted, I'm sure there are still artists and musicians and all that, but I feel like this isn't quite what I was expecting. I feel like I clicked my heels three times while whispering "There's no place like home," only to end up in yuppie paradise. On the other hand, I'd rather be in DC than some other small, random city [cough SYRACUSEcough].
I know many who love DC, who came just to be able feel close to where all the political decisions are made, but I am not one of those people. While I am not disinterested in politics, it is just an area I try not to become too involved in. How did I end up in DC, and how did I end up working for the federal government? God knows. But besides my surprise of ending up NOT in NYC, I am actually very excited and happy about my new job. I guess I just need to suck it up and get used to living here. I'm sure I'll find great and fascinating things to do in DC.
